This did not change until 1961 when South Africa toured and due a shirt colour clash Australia offered to change their strip. The design has since remained largely unchanged. Brief History: The Australian rugby union team dates back to 1883 when it became the first team to play an international test against New Zealand. Later games in the 1880’s where against the British Isles. It must be said that these teams represented the colonies at the time for example New South Wales etc, however all played under the name Australia. It was not until 1903 did the Australian colonies unite to play as one against New Zealand. By 1907 the rival code of rugby league was established and along with both wars not much growth at an international level was seen after World War 2. After the war Australia started to play regularly against the New Zealand All Black and Maori contesting the Bledisloe Cup which had been donated in 1931. Since then Australia has gone on to win every major trophy including the Webb Ellis Cup twice making them one of the greatest teams in the world even though their win record remains relatively low at just 52%.
