Brief History: The team which is now known as the Lions are a Super 14 franchise which has seen mixed results since the competition began. Unfortunately for the South African supporters the team has come away with the wooden spoon three times in 1998, 2003 and 2004. However going against this trend the team managed to reach the semi finals in 2000 and 2001. The team was originally selected to play in the Super 12 as they had been one of the top teams in the Currie Cup. Both New Zealand and Australia opted for Franchises to be formed for each team instead of letting their national competition decide what teams would play in the Super 12 competition. It was not to late 2006 did the team announce that they where to change names and would no longer be known as the Cats.
The Lions Rugby Team is based in Johannesburg and draw players from several rugby unions from the North West and Mpumalanga. The team’s home ground is Ellis Park which is famous for hosting the final of the world cup match in 1995 between South Africa and the All Blacks. With the knowledge that the team can reach the semi final the team really needs to come together to prove to the rest of the competition that they are a contender. Supporters make sure you get your hands on the Lions Super 14 Rugby shirt.
