Brief History: The South African Rugby team better know us the Springboks played their first test against a touring British Isles team in 1981. The British Isles soon returned in 1896 to play another 4 tests and in this serious South Africa had their very first win. Over the next 30 years rugby was one of the most popular games played and watches by thousands and was topped of when the team toured Europe wining their first Grand Slam. By the year 1920, New Zealand and South Africa where the two most powerful rugby nations and this was a start of a long rivalry which still exists to this date. South Africa toured both Australia and New Zealand in 1921 still today one of the most famous rugby tours in the history of the game. The test serious was however a draw with each team winning one game and the final game been a 0-0 draw. After the war the Springboks had a huge amount of success including a 4 – 0 serious win over New Zealand and wins over every European nation they game up against. However the Springboks where overshadowed for several decades due to apartheid, with the team been made targets by many protesting groups. This also ruled South Africa out of the first two world cups, however this has not stopped this great rugby nation coming back to claim two world cups one in 1995 and the most recent one in 2007.
