The Stormers Rugby Team
Super 14 Sharks Rugby Shirt: The first Stormers jersey in 1998 was a combination of the three unions that made up the regional franchise – Boland, SWD and WP. A number of colours made up the jersey – blue, green, gold, red and white with a triangular logo making a wave effect supporters had really mixed views about the design. In 1999 the familiar lighting bolt was introduced on the breast of the jersey this was teamed with white and black socks. The changes took place to try and make the kit “sexy” and appealing to a greater range of people. Black is now one of the main attributes to the Stormers brand.
In 2007 there was another change. Stormers kit went from black to navy blue. The reason for this was the merging of the Stormers and WP brands.
Sharks Brief History:Stormers are another South African team sponsored by Vodacom. They are based in Cape Town. The Super 12 competition began in 1996. The top four teams from South Africa’s Currie Cup gained entry into the Super 12. Western Province entered into the competition but their performance was poor. Because of this South Africa adapted a different approach and abolished qualification through the Currie Cup. This was how the Stormers were formed but in their first season their performance was poor. They won only three games out of the 11 they played. In 1999 the Stormers had a very different season. They only lost three matches! The Stormers hosted the semi-final in Cape Town but lost against Otago. The following years were really mixed seasons until 2004. In 2004 the Stormers qualified for the finals and finished third place over all. In 2008 the Stormers finished tied for 4th place on the Super 14 table. The team captain for 2008 was centre Jean de Villiers.
